Abandoned Cart Recovery on WhatsApp: A Practical Playbook
Timing, message design, incentives and consent — how to build a WhatsApp cart-recovery flow that wins back sales without annoying shoppers.

Most online shoppers who add something to their cart never complete the purchase. Many of them weren't saying no — they got distracted, had a question or wanted to compare. A well-timed WhatsApp message brings them back while the intent is still warm.
Start with consent
You can only send cart reminders to shoppers who opted in to WhatsApp messages — for example via a checkbox at checkout or in their account. Make the opt-in specific ('Get order updates and reminders on WhatsApp') and store when and how it was given.
Timing that works
- First reminder: 30 minutes to 2 hours after abandonment, while the shopper still remembers.
- Optional second reminder: 24 hours later, ideally answering a likely objection (delivery time, returns, sizing).
- Stop there. More than two reminders turns helpful into pushy.
What a good reminder contains
- The product image and name — so it's instantly recognisable.
- A one-tap button back to the restored cart.
- A reason to act now that's genuine: low stock, free delivery threshold, offer ending.
- A quick-reply option like 'I have a question' that opens a conversation with your bot or team.
Incentives: use sparingly
Discount codes in every reminder train customers to abandon carts on purpose. Reserve incentives for the second reminder, for first-time buyers or for high-value carts — and test whether free shipping works as well as a percentage discount.
The best cart reminder doesn't push — it removes the reason the shopper hesitated.
Turn the reminder into a conversation
The real advantage over email is the reply. When a shopper asks about sizing, delivery to Austria or a payment method, an AI assistant can answer instantly and send them back to checkout. Many recovered sales come from these replies, not from the button.
Measure recovery properly
- Recovery rate: share of reminded carts that convert within 72 hours.
- Revenue recovered, net of any discount given.
- Reply rate and opt-out rate — your early-warning signal for message fatigue.
